MEET THE STAFF
Susie Steed, Director of Admission
Growing up, I always thought I’d be a teacher. My idol was my aunt, who taught 4th grade for years and was inducted into the Teachers Hall of Fame at the end of her career. She spent hours playing spelling games with me using words like “antidisestablishmentarianism.” When left on our own, my sister and I played school, but since she was older, she always got to be the teacher. At KU, I majored in elementary education with an emphasis in special education. I did my student teaching in a combined 1st and 2nd grade classroom in a small, rural school outside of Lawrence. I loved that age level, the students’ hunger for learning, and I appreciated the benefits of small class sizes in being able to give individual attention to each child.
My career path took a detour after I interned for Senator Bob Dole in Washington, between my junior and senior year in high school. I caught a mild case of "Potomac Fever" and ended up moving to Washington, D.C. to handle constituent casework for the Senator. After living and working in Washington, D.C. and Little Rock, Arkansas for a number of years, I moved back to Kansas to be closer to my parents. I was fortunate to find a position at Wichita Collegiate that enabled me to combine my love of education with my passion for helping people solve problems – in this case, the challenge of finding the best school for their children.
I never fully appreciated the value of a private school education until I began working at Collegiate in 1992. It’s the most amazing place being a student at WCS is almost like having a personal trainer for each subject! We have phenomenal, dedicated teachers; a carefully crafted and sequenced curriculum; a focus on active learning and simulations that make learning interesting, fun, and memorable; motivated students who look forward to coming to school every day; and involved families who are committed to giving their children the greatest of all possible gifts: the best education they can find. I would encourage any families who have the slightest interest in seeing what we have to offer their children to call and schedule time to see our students and teachers in action! Wichita Collegiate School has been my home for as long as I can remember. My mom began teaching at Collegiate in 1987, giving me the opportunity to grow up as a Spartan. As a student, I took advantage of all that Collegiate had to offer: competing on the volleyball and basketball courts, performing on the stage, volunteering within our community, and excelling in the classroom. But what I remember most of my time as a student wasn’t what I achieved—it was the people standing beside me every step of the way. The teachers, coaches, and administrators at Wichita Collegiate are the indelible magic that make Collegiate the truly special place it is and provide an environment in which our students can reach their fullest potential.
A class of 1999 graduate of Wichita Collegiate School, I went on to graduate from Creighton University in 2003, where I earned a B.A. in English-Creative Writing. Discovering a love of education during my time at Creighton, I earned a Master’s of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas in 2005. After working at KU for several years and Wichita State University briefly, I decided to stay at home with my young family. During that time, I developed my own graphic design business and began assisting Wichita Collegiate School with their publications. I have been head coach of the Middle School volleyball team since 2009 and joined the Lower School staff full time in 2015. In 2018 I joined the Admissions team.
When the time came to decide where my own children would grow up, the answer was obvious. The comfort I have as a parent knowing that my three sons will benefit from the education, care, and support I also received as a child cannot be put into words. As an alum, parent, and staff member, I can uniquely understand and appreciate the value that a Collegiate education offers its students. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact me at (316) 771-2224 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I could not be more thrilled to get to welcome new families home to Wichita Collegiate School!
