| Organizations for Upper School Students Wichita Collegiate Upper School Clubs and Activities Astronomy Club - Astronomy Club members meet periodically to view the sky or to go on field trips. They hope to talk to astronomers and do some real astronomy via the Internet. They might possibly use a radio telescope to listen to Jupiter! Membership is open to anyone who is interested. Creative Writing Club - This club is designed to connect writers throughout Collegiate with the purpose of sharing ideas and creativity and to have some extra-curricular creative writing fun. Members will share and discuss either their own or their favorite writer's work. Members will discuss both verse and prose and nearly every type of creative writing: poetry, screenplays, song lyrics, short stories, novels, rants, plays, essays, fan fiction, comic strips, etc. Membership is open to any Collegiate Upper School Student. Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) - Each Tuesday, members of FCS gather in Scott Hawley's classroom at break for a devotion, snack, and fellowship. Membership is open to anyone who is interested. Contact Mr. Hawley (shawley@wcsks.com) for more details (or just show up!) It's an encouraging way to worship in the company of your peers. French Club - French Club presents the opportunity to enjoy French in fun way outside of class. It is for any present or former French student. Members might meet for a "causerie" to chat at break while listening to Franc music and enjoying French food. Members also watch a French film together over a French dinner. In the past, the French Club has celebrated National French Week with bake sales. Members have served as French tutors in the Early Childhood Division. Student staff chooses among student submissions (unidentified by author/artist's name) to create and layout a magazine comprised of poetry, prose, drawings and photography. Membership requires only an interest in writing or visual arts. Students can get involved by attending an organizational meeting in September with future meeting dates to be announced. Any student (whether on Hemispheres' staff or not) with an interest in these areas may submit work for consideration-details for doing so will be provided though out the year. See Ms. Barbara Stokley (bstokley@wcsks.com) for more details. Honor Council - Honor Council members are nominated by faculty members in the spring and are elected by students by grade level. There is a representative for each class, plus a senior prefect. Honor Council seeks to promote ideas of integrity and hears cases involving lying, cheating, or stealing. The Honor Council meets on an as-needed basis. See the bulletin board outside of room 101 to find out who your class representative is and to get updates on Honor Council hearings. Mrs. Tammy Mykel (tmykel@wcsks.com) is the faculty sponsor. Literary Club - Literary Club meets once a month at different locations to discuss a book the group has read. Meetings also have food served. Membership requirements include attending an organizational at the beginning of the year and attending at least two meetings per semester. Pro Humanitate - Pro Humanitate encourages student to volunteer and provides information to students about different organization sand agencies in our community. Students meet to discuss, choose, and plan service projects. Projects will be posted on the bulletin board in the commons. Membership is open to anyone interested. Robotics - Robotics is a six-week robotics building and testing course culminating in a state competition. Students work hard and have a lot of fun while getting a small taste of what engineering is all about. Membership is open to anyone interested. A president will be selected by the sponsors. See Mr. Scott Hawley (shawley@wsks.com) for details. Science Olympiad - Students compete in 22 science events at Regional and State. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for activities such as chemistry, physics, biology, environmental sciences, geology, engineering, math, and map making. The membership requirements are anyone who is willing to work hard and is able to attend the almost daily meetings that begin in mid-October and end toward the end of April. Four officers (usually juniors and seniors with previous Science Olympiad experience) will be selected. Spanish Club - The Spanish Club members will participate in student-directed activities including the exploration of culture and food, community, Day of the Dead, and Cinco de Mayo. Activities include Spanish movies, restaurant outings, and trips to the art museum. Members must be currently enrolled in Spanish class and have a strong interest in Spanish. Student Council (STUCO) - The student council functions as a liaison between the student body and the faculty and administration. They create a positive atmosphere by organizing social activities. Elections are held during the spring semester for the upcoming year. Each class has a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and a class representative. A list of class officers and STUCO announcements are located on the bulletin board outside of room 101. Wizards - Wizards is a group of students that periodically makes science presentations to students in the Early Childhood and Lower School divisions.
