Academic Tools

In keeping with the mission to “provide the highest quality education for each student,” Wichita Collegiate provides a number of tools designed to help students reach their academic goals and potential.

Mimio Boards

Several classrooms in the Upper School, including the math classrooms, are equipped with Mimio Boards which capture and record class notes that are written on a special white board and uploaded to the Website. Students may access those notes via Internet while doing their homework to see problems worked in class in real time.

Tutorials
WCS teachers don’t race out the door as soon as classes are over. They stay in their classrooms for the hour after school (and in many cases, longer) to provide tutorials for students. Tutorials provide great opportunities for extra help, extra practice, extra confidence-building. Many students take advantage of tutorials on their own; however, teachers may also request that a student attend tutorials. In most cases, activities are not allowed to begin until after tutorial time. In those instances when a practice must begin earlier, students are excused to go to tutorials. More detailed information about our tutorial program may be found in the Academic section of this website under “Tutorials.”

Learning Lab
Wichita Collegiate also offers a Learning Lab program designed to provide specialized instructional support for students whose academic success is at risk or limited by specific learning disabilities, or by deficiencies in basic skills. History has shown that many students with learning disabilities are capable of flourishing and excelling in our program. Historically, our goal has been to allow each student capable of handling the rigors of the Collegiate curriculum to have the tools necessary to do so successfully.

Students in the Lower, Middle, and Upper School are placed in Learning Lab by the Division Head in consultation with the division counselor/psychologist. Input from the teachers and parents is considered critical. Students typically have a diagnosis of a learning disability from a psychologist or doctor; the diagnosis includes accommodations and suggestions for the school. Occasionally a student will be referred for help in Learning Lab who has not yet been officially diagnosed with a learning disability. A student in this category may be weak in a particular skill that is affecting educational success or may be suffering from a temporary academic struggle due to self-esteem, family, or personal issues.

Our learning lab program includes specific skill building, as in the Alphabetic Phonics program, and classroom support, as in homework preparation, study skills and strategies, organizational help, and exam preparation. (More detailed information, including questions frequently asked about the Learning Lab, may be found within the Learning Lab page under the Academics section of this website.)
