Collegiate students enjoyed competing a wide variety of events during the 2006-2007 school year. The list below includes just a sampling of their success!
Upper School
National Merit Scholars- Nine Collegiate students earned national Merit recognition, including 4 finalists 1 Semifinalist, and 4 Commended Students.
Advanced Placement (AP) Exams - Wichita Collegiate School offers 18 Advanced Placement courses. In 2006-2007, seventy-three Upper School students received 126 scores on AP examinations and earned scores of “3” or better on seventy-nine percent of those exams, potentially earning college credit.
College Acceptances - The members of the Class of 2006 received more than 200 offers of admissions to more than 90 different colleges and universities across the country, as well as merit-based scholarship offers of more than $2.5 million. (On average, approximately two-thirds of our students apply to at least one out-of-state university ranked as “very competitive” or higher by the Barron’s Profiles of American Colleges. Over the past three years, ninety-two percent of these students received at least one acceptance to these prestigious universities.)
Science Olympiad -- The Upper School Science Olympiad Team placed 2nd in the State and went to Nationals for the second consecutive year, medaling in two events. The Spartans also competed at Nationals in 2004.
Scholars’ Bowl The Upper School Scholars’ Bowl Team won the League Championship, placed second in Class 3A Regionals, and 2nd place at the 3A State Championships.
Debate – WCS hosted the 3A regionals in 2007. The Spartans finished 3rd, missing state competition by only one ballot.
National Latin Exam- Two students earned gold medals for the 4th consecutive year. ALL of the Latin II students were recognized for their performance. Nine students earned gold medals, 7 students earned silver medals, 8 students earned magna Cum Laude recognition, and 7 students earned cum laude recognition.
National French Exam - Two of our students were national level winners, 15 scored within the top 20 in the State of Kansas, 8 in the top ten and 7 scored between 11 and 20 in the State in their respective levels of study. They were invited to apply for the Star Award, which involves nine $500 scholarships. Chelsea also earned the prestigious Langenscheidt Award for placing third in the Nation, and first in the State. The award includes a certificate and a Langenscheidt French Dictionary.
National Spanish Exam – Four students placed in the top 3 in the State of Kansas at their respective levels. One student placed first, two students placed second, and one student placed 3rd. Collegiate had 2 gold medal winners, 16 silver medal winners, 4 bronze medal winners, and 18 honorable mention winners.
Perfoming Arts
Jester Awards - Students at WCS were honored with eight nominations for the prestigious Jester Awards from Music Theatre of Wichita. Mikey Cohlmia took home a Jester Award for her performance as Ti Moune in Once Upon This Island.
Drumline - The Spartan Drumline was invited by Music Theatre of Wichita to perform during MTWs productions of Disney’s High School Musical, and was met with thunderous applause!
Athletics
State Championships - The Spartans won the Class 3A State Boys Basketball Championship, and won the Class 3A State Golf Championship for the 8th time in the last ten years. The Spartan Boys Tennis Team placed 2nd in the State.
