Collegiate Facts

The School
Wichita Collegiate School is a not-for-profit independent coeducational day school serving families with children age 2 through Grade 12. It was founded in 1963 by a group of parents who wanted to provide a uniquely excellent education for their students. From the first year’s enrollment of fewer than 100 students to this year's record enrollment of nearly 1,000 students, Collegiate has maintained its emphasis on individual attention in small classes. A challenging academic curriculum, a focus on values and community service, and opportunities for participation in the arts and athletics are all part of an integrated program created to allow students to grow, discover talents, and realize their potential. The school is located at 9115 East 13th Street in Wichita, Kansas 67206 (316) 634-0433.

Our students score 15-20% higher than the national average on the ACT.

College Enrollment
One hundred percent of WCS graduates go on to college, and since 1967, more than half of our graduates have attended one of the 100 best colleges and universities in the nation, as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. Among the colleges and universities chosen by the 62 members of the Class of 2007are Baylor University, Berklee College of Music, Dartmouth College, Emporia State University, Furman University, Illinois Wesleyan University, Kansas State University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Mid-America Nazarine University, Northwestern University, Southern Methodist University, University of Kansas, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Notre Dame, Wake Forest University, Washington University, and Wichita State University.

National Merit Recognition
Historically, an average of 15 to 20 percent of WCS graduates are recognized each year as National Merit Finalists, Semifinalists, or Commended Students. Over the past four years, forty-eight WCS students have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. In the fall of 2007, nine out of our sixty-three seniors were honored as Semifinalists or Commended Students.

Curriculum
From Preschool through Upper School, students are exposed to a carefully sequenced curriculum that includes math, science, English, social studies, foreign language, music, art, computer, and physical education. WCS emphasizes a developmental approach to early childhood education, offering traditional and Montessori programs. Exciting integrated studies in the Lower School make learning interesting and fun. Our Middle School faculty members know the secret of keeping students focused on academics while attending to the developmental and social issues that face preadolescents. The Upper School follows a carefully designed college preparatory curriculum offering 18 Advanced Placement courses and concurrent credit for some courses with local universities. Our final goal is a student who can think critically and independently, analyze perceptively, and speak and write with confidence and conviction.

Academic Competitions
The Science Olympiad Team earned the right to compete at the National Competition in 2004, 2006 and 2007. The Robotics Team at WCS has ranked in the top four in the state in recent years, and competed at the National Competition in 2002. Middle School Science Olympiad teams also have an impressive record of success, and placed 2nd in the State in the small school division and 3rd overall in 2007. Collegiate students also perform very well in state and national math competitions, and on the national exams in mythology, Latin, French, and Spanish.

Fine Arts
WCS is renown for its performing and visual arts programs. Opportunities in instrumental and vocal music, drama, and studio arts are available to all students, as is an on-site after-school Fine Arts Academy. In its piano lab, Collegiate has been a pioneer in the teaching of keyboarding to kindergartners to increase cognitive development. Several video production students have won awards at the KAN Film Festival,  and several graduates are now working for film companies with work on major motion pictures. WCS students and faculty have been honored with Jester Awards given by The Music Theater of Wichita in recognition of excellence in high school performing arts programs.

Athletics
WCS competes in a league with other schools in central Kansas. Since 1990, Collegiate has won 57 state championships in sports such as football, basketball, tennis, baseball, and golf, including State Championships in 2007 for boys basketball and golf. Collegiate also fields competitive teams in softball, volleyball, cross country, track and bowling. Over the past 20 years, Collegiate students have received more than 30 Division I and II athletic scholarships.

Facilities
Located on forty acres in east Wichita, Collegiate serves students from all areas of the city and surrounding communities. The campus is easily reached by major thoroughfares. Along with excellent classrooms, libraries, laboratories, art rooms and computer rooms, there are three gymnasiums, three indoor theaters, an amphitheater, six tennis courts, a track, football field, baseball and softball complex, and playgrounds. The Upper School was built in 1992; a new Lower School building was completed in January of 2000. The school completed a $5 million capital campaign in 2004-2005 for the renovation of the Early Childhood and Middle School facilities, which was completed in 2006.

Summer Programs
In June of  2007, Wichita Collegiate School began a partnership with Duke University to serve as the site for a Duke Talent Identification program (TIP) summer programs, as well as some Saturday Academic Adventures in the fall.

Students from all areas of Wichita and surrounding communities come to Collegiate’s Summer Explorations program.
