Tom Davis

Headmaster

tdavis@wcsks.com

My wife, Debi, and I have been associated with Wichita Collegiate School since 1984 when the first of our four children began attending. That began our 25 year journey as Collegiate parents until our youngest graduated in 2009. All four of our children had wonderful experiences during their time at Collegiate and we can say that it greatly helped to prepare them for college, to guide them to their respective careers and to shape the people whom they are today. That is our family testimony of what a great school Collegiate is.

As our children became more involved in school, I became more involved. I served on the Collegiate Board of Trustees for 13 years. In the year 2000 when the position of Headmaster became open, I applied and was appointed in that same year. Since that time we have seen the campus grow, the curriculum enhanced and the faculty rise to even greater levels of teaching excellence in this ever-changing world.

My wife and I are both graduates of Rice University and I earned a Masters of Business Administration from Wichita State University in 2000. We are involved in our local church and in various community organizations. Although our four children are now grown and having children of their own, we consider all the students at Collegiate our extended family. I cherish the privilege to serve them each day on our campus and I rejoice in seeing each individual child grow and mature through their time with us.

I am a proud Collegiate "lifer" who started WCS in Kindergarten in 1971.  After graduating in 1984, I graduated from Baylor University with a BA in English Literature and then went to the University of Kansas School of Law where I graduated in 1991.  I am currently a member of the Kansas Bar.

From 1991-93, I worked for the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department in Houston, TX where I worked in the juvenile law area.  From 1993-97 I worked as an attorney at the American Society of Travel Agents in Alexandria, VA (outside of Washington, D.C.) where I traveled the world with my husband Tom, who was working at the National Institutes of Health as an Infectious Diseases Fellow.

After returning to our hometown in 1997, I joined the WCS Alumni Board, serving as the President in 1999-2000 and for the next 14 years, served the Wichita community as a volunteer leader for WCS, the Junior League of Wichita, the Sedgwick County Medical Alliance, Arts Partners, Kidzcope, and the Wichita Grand Opera.

After serving nine years on the WCS Board of Trustees, three years as the Development Chair and the last three years as Chair of the Board, we relocated with our family to New Orleans for two years.  We returned to Wichita in 2012 when I took the job as Director of Development and am now the Director of Advancement.  I oversee the areas of development (fundraising), marketing, communication, alumni relations, digital media and admission.  Tom is a physician with Infectious Disease Consultants and we have two awesome kids, Gracie, Class of 2017 and Ian, Class of 2020.  It is my privilege and honor to work for the school that has been a fundamental part of my life since 1971.

My path to WCS started in Hutchinson, Kansas, where I was born and raised. After graduating from Hutchinson High School, I went to the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in elementary education with a special education emphasis. In between my junior and senior year at KU, I interned for Senator Bob Dole. It was an exciting time to be in Washington, D.C., and I ended up moving there after graduation. I was fortunate to be able to rejoin Senator Dole's staff as his caseworker. I loved helping Kansas constituents and people from all over the country solve problems that they were having with various government agencies. After marrying and moving to Little Rock, I was fortunate to be able to continue doing casework for newly elected Representative Ed Bethune as well as serving as his District Coordinator later in his three terms of service.

After moving back to Kansas, I was lucky to be offered a position in the Admission Office at Wichita Collegiate School in January of 1992. In addition to developing great relationships with wonderful colleagues and WCS parents, and seeing students blossom and achieve, one special highlight for me was when Senator Dole accepted an invitation to be our commencement speaker for the Class of 1997. He requested to visit with the seniors an hour before the ceremony, and he was as impressed with the seniors as they were with him. I will never forget him saying in a follow-up note, "Your school's high standards and record of success serve as a great example to hundreds of institutions across America seeking the best education for our young people."

Wichita Collegiate continues to be an exciting workplace full of inspiring teachers; happy, motivated kids; and parents who want to provide their children with the best possible educational experience. I love introducing prospective families to the opportunities that await their children at WCS!

Lisa Schooler

Director of Alumni Relations and Digital Media

My path to Wichita Collegiate began in 1994 when my husband Brian Schooler began his high school coaching career.  After being around the amazing WCS community there was never a doubt in my mind that I wanted my own sons to experience the best school in the world!

I worked my way through college at Wichita State as a bank teller.  In 1986 I began my first career as a men’s clothing buyer for a family owned store called Henry’s.  The store closed in 1994.  I stayed at home for a few years with my boys before taking a part time position at Discovery Place Preschool where I was responsible for helping the director with the admissions process.

In February of 2000 I began my second career at Wichita Collegiate School.  I am currently the Director of Alumni Relations and Digital Media.  My responsibilities include fundraising, event planning, and communication, social media for the school and alumni, and webmaster.

Every day is a new adventure and I absolutely love it!

I have served in many roles as a volunteer with the following organizations: Junior League, Heart Association, Wichita Festivals, Wichita Collegiate School, and currently I sit on the Kidzcope Board as well as the Polo On the Plains committee.

I have two sons who graduated from Collegiate.  Alex started school at WCS in 3rd grade and graduated in 2009.  Alex played Division I Football for Marshall University. He is currently a sales representative for Pratt Industries in Kansas City.  Spenser is a Collegiate lifer and graduated in 2013.  He is taking classes at Wichita State and lives in Kansas City too.  My husband, Brian Schooler passed away from cancer in 2014. He coached at Wichita Collegiate for 19 years.   I was so touched to see Brian’s former players come together and fund a Brian Schooler Memorial Path and stone monument where the current WCS football teams surround and pray before every home game.  This is a special place!

Susan Klingenberg

Administrative Assistant for the Advancement Office

sklingenberg@wcsks.com

Susan Klingenberg has been at WCS since July of 1988, way back in the dark ages when women faculty were not allowed to wear pants to work, student uniforms had just been discontinued and there were only about 500 students.  Many changes have happened since then!  Since starting in the Development Office, she transferred to the Upper School, where she was for 10 years.  She transferred back to the Development Office, which is now the Advancement Office, in June of 2000.  Part of her duties include keeping up with all WCS alums, now numbering over 2000.  It can be a tough job since they are in almost every state and in several different countries too!  Susan is also an assistant Kickin’ Kids and adult Karate instructor in the after school program and the City of Wichita Parks Department.

I was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas.  After graduating  from Wichita Heights High School, I attended Wichita State University for a year and then transferred to the University of Kansas where I received a BA in English Literature.  After College, I got married to my husband David, worked 3 years and then we decided to have a family and I was a “stay-at-home mom” until the boys were of school age.

As a parent,  I loved the environment so much at Collegiate, I wanted to work there as well.  It is such a kind, nurturing and caring community;  the teachers, coaches and staff treat you like family.  Since 2008, I have had the honor of working here at Collegiate, 6 as a Part-Time Middle School Assistant/Receptionist,  and 3 years as being an Administrative Assistant for the Admission Office.   My family has been associated with Collegiate for the past 15 years.  We have 3 sons, 2 which have graduated from Collegiate, Myles Class of (2012) and a graduate of Kansas State University, currently employed with Cargill.   Mitchell Class of (2014), currently a Junior at Kansas State University and a member of the Kansas State Football team and Mac Class of (2018), our youngest, is a Junior currently attending Collegiate.  Last but not least, my husband David, works for Mid-Continent Instruments and serves as the Spartan Club President.

Collegiate has made our sons “well-rounded” in Academics, Fine Arts and Athletics.  When the two older sons graduated and went off to College, they found that they were well prepared, more so than some of their other college peers.  They also felt like Collegiate was academically more of a challenge than College.  When I look back, I’m glad we chose Collegiate for our sons.  We know it has put them on the right path to be successful in life and in their future.

I am a 1977 graduate of Wichita Collegiate School. After graduating from Collegiate, I attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, graduating in 1981 with a B.A. in Economics. I came back to Wichita Collegiate in 1981, teaching Middle School math and coaching basketball for two years before deciding to pursue an MBA at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. After graduating from Duke in 1985, I went to work for Mark Twain Bank in Kansas City as a commercial lending officer. I worked there until 1989 when I left to work for my dad in his buffalo meat business. In 1990, I was asked to return to Collegiate to become the first business manager for the school. I have also coached both Middle School basketball and Upper School golf during many of those years.

I am married to Julie and we have two children, Kendall and Maddie. Kendall graduated from Collegiate in 2016 and is a student at Baylor University and Maddie will graduate from Collegiate in 2019.

In 2007, I was hired as the Assistant Director of Electronic Learning. I earned my B.S. in Computer Science, with a Mathematics minor from the University of Central Florida. Right out of college, I was hired as a Software Engineer for Kennedy Space Center NASA, implementing procedures to verify launch sequences for the Space Shuttle missions, including integrated testing. Responsibilities included the flight software before Space Transportation System (STS) missions and in the Firing room for STS-28R & STS-32R and was backup for STS-35 mission. On the military side, I was responsible for the classified software communications between the orbiter and the payloads, the telemetry data retrieval and analysis to support Shuttle systems testing, and troubleshooting software anomalies. I have CompTIA A+ and Managing Office 365 Identities and Services Training.

Before coming to WCS, I homeschooled my 3 children in the Calvert Education Curriculum. During my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, walking my dogs, and staying connected with my 3 children (son earned his Master’s from the University of Cambridge, middle daughter is a junior at Emporia State, and youngest daughter is a sophomore at K-State).

Working at WCS I have seen the commitment of the teachers and staff to the students and Collegiate as a whole, it gives me great pride to help them with all of their technology needs.

I began my journey with Wichita Collegiate as a 2 year old and was at Collegiate until going to KU in 1980.  When my husband and I brought our 2 year old to Collegiate in 2006, there was a position open in Early Childhood for a secretary so I applied, was hired, and I came back to WCS as a staff member.  It is such a rewarding experience to be a part of WCS now and to reflect back and witness how much the campus has evolved over the years.  We love Collegiate and the WCS family and friends we have here.   Our children definitely have it better than we did!  I moved to WCS Electronic Learning in 20I4, and I currently serve on the WCS Patrons of the Arts board as Vice President.  Before coming back to Collegiate, I was employed by Bank of America, its predecessors, and Credit Union of America from 1990-2006.  While working for the financial institutions I held the positions of Security Officer, Facilities Manager to the 8 branches locally at that time, and AVP, System Analyst.  I completed my MCSE and several other bank proprietary classes.  I was part of the conversion team to change processors resulting from Bank Acquisitions.  I controlled security access for users nationally on LAN, WAN, Mainframe and other applications.  I trained, coached, and was Webmaster for the division.  I performed many other security functions including the building alarm systems, vault security, and other building security.  I developed robbery procedures that all of the branches utilized.  I worked closely with vendors to ensure facilities were maintained to the corporate standard, maintaining invoices and maintenance agreements.  I was in charge of all of the insurance property claims and ran many daily reports to track new checking accounts, deposits and loans in order to assist management remain goal focused.  I have completed Ground School at Yingling Aircraft and have 40 hours towards a pilot license.  I am a trained Weather Spotter from NOAH Weather Service, a certified tax specialist from H & R Block, and am trained in CPR for babies, children, adults, and animals.  In my spare time, I enjoy being a Mother and trying to keep up with all of the activities.  I also love bicycling, gardening, yoga, jogging, crafts, and grooming animals.
